I ordered Deborah Norville Serenity Chunky Weight for the first time from Joann.com just to give it a try. I liked working with it so I designed this hat with it. It is soft to the touch and I like the weight of it. Bulky yarn is satisfying to work with because you can really fly right through your project and you get to enjoy your finished item pretty quickly.
Materials needed:
• 6.50 MM crochet hook
• Deborah Norville Serenity Chunky Weight
• Buttons if desired (for decoration on the brim)
• Tapestry needle for sewing in the ends
Gauge:
• Toddler- hat height (top to bottom of brim)= 6.5"
• Child- hat height (top to bottom of brim)= 7.5"
• Adult- hat height (top to bottom of brim)= 8.5"
Abbreviations:
• ch= chain
• sc= single crochet
• dc= double crochet
• sc2tog= single crochet 2 together
• MR= magic ring
• sl st= slip stitch
• BLO= back loop only
• cluster= yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through stitch, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on your hook, yarn over, insert hook into the same stitch, yarn over, pull through stitch, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on your hook, yarn over, pull through remaining 3 loop on hook
• cluster= yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through stitch, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on your hook, yarn over, insert hook into the same stitch, yarn over, pull through stitch, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on your hook, yarn over, pull through remaining 3 loop on hook
Finished size:
• Toddler- fits 18-19" head circumference
• Child- fits 20-21" head circumference
• Adult- fits 21-22" head circumference
Toddler:
1: MR, ch 2, 7 clusters in the ring, pull tight, join with sl st to 1st cluster (not ch 2).
2: Ch 2, 2 clusters in each, join with sl st to 1st cluster (not ch 2)- 14 clusters
3: Ch 2, (2 clusters in one, cluster in the next) around, join with sl st to 1st cluster (not ch 2)- 21 clusters
4-6: Ch 2, cluster in each, join with sl st to 1st cluster (not ch 2)- 21 clusters
7: Begin brim, ch 7, working back down the ch you just made, in the 2nd sc from hook, sc in BLO, sc BLO in the next 5 ch (6 BLO sc total), then sc2tog in the same stitch that you started your ch and in the next,
turn and then working back up your ch, sc BLO 6 times, ch 1, turn working back down your chain, sc BLO 6 times, sc2tog in same as previous sc2tog and in next, continue in this fashion all the way around the bottom of the hat until you get back to the beginning, I end working up the ch, working away from the actual hat, after the ch 1, I bind off
then use a tapestry needle to weave the brim closed, working the in the BLO to keep the ribbed look going and then weave in my ends completely.
