Free Crochet Pattern: The Greene Pom Pom Scarf

I have been working on fall/winter items for my kids lately.  I came up with this scarf (there's a matching hat coming soon too!).  I love the color block look.  I showed my daughter yarn and asked her to pick out 2 colors and then I added the cream.  I used Cascade Yarns Pacific here.  I am loving this yarn lately.  I have used it to make hats, blankets, amigurumi, you name it...it is quickly becoming one of my go to yarns.

This scarf is super simple.  I have written the pattern in 3 sizes but you can easily customize it to be any size you want.  I use a pom-pom maker for my pom-poms but you can find a tutorial online if you don't have a pom-pom maker or if you want to make it without one.

Materials needed:

• U.S. I/9- 5.5 MM crochet hook

• Cascade Yarns Pacific in 3 colors- used here: 37 Clover, 52 Geranium, 01 Cream (you can easily substitute any other yarn, your  finished size may change though)

• Tapestry needle for sewing in the ends 
• Clover pom-pom maker- I used the 3 3/8" one

Gauge:

• the quickest way to do this is work a few rows and check width, my scarf was 6" wide

Abbreviations:

• ch= chain

• sc= single crochet

• dc= double crochet

• sl st= slip stitch

Finished size:

• Toddler= about 36" long by 6" wide
• Child= about 42" long by 6" wide

• Adult= about 48" long by 6" wide

Toddler:

1: Using the first color, leave about a 12" tail to attach your pom-pom later, ch 21, turn, sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next, *sc in next, dc in next*, repeat from * to * across.

2: Ch 1, turn, *sc in next, dc in next*, repeat from * to * across.

Repeat row 2 until the scarf measures 10".  In the last yarn over using this color, change to your second color.

Repeat row 2 with your second color until the second color portion measures 10".  In the last yarn over using this color, change to your third color.

Repeat row 2 with your third color until the second color portion measures 10".  Leave a long tail (about 12") to attach the pom-pom.

Make 2 pom-poms- one with the first color you used and one with the third color you used.  Then attach the pom-poms to the scarf as described in the below photos.  Weave in the ends.

To add a pom-pom-

Thread your tapestry needle with one of the long tails

Then, weave the yarn into every back loop (if you are working on the starting color) or every stitch (if you are working on the ending color)-

 

Do this for every back loop (or stitch) across the scarf-

Then pull the remaining tail tightly to cinch the scarf-

Weave the yarn through the first stitch to secure the scarf into a tight circle-

Use the remaining tail to secure the pom-pom to the scarf-

The one side will look like this-

The other side will look like this-

Repeat for the pom-pom on the other side.

Child:

1: Using the first color, leave about a 12" tail to attach your pom-pom later,  ch 21, turn, sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next, *sc in next, dc in next*, repeat from * to * across.

2: Ch 1, turn, *sc in next, dc in next*, repeat from * to * across.

Repeat row 2 until the scarf measures 12".  In the last yarn over using this color, change to your second color.

Repeat row 2 with your second color until the second color portion measures 12".  In the last yarn over using this color, change to your third color.

Repeat row 2 with your third color until the second color portion measures 12".  Leave a long tail (about 12") to attach the pom-pom.

Make 2 pom-poms- one with the first color you used and one with the third color you used.  Then attach the pom-poms to the scarf as described in the above photos.  Weave in the ends.

Adult:

1: Using the first color, leave about a 12" tail to attach your pom-pom later,  ch 21, turn, sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next, *sc in next, dc in next*, repeat from * to * across.

2: Ch 1, turn, *sc in next, dc in next*, repeat from * to * across.

Repeat row 2 until the scarf measures 14".  In the last yarn over using this color, change to your second color.

Repeat row 2 with your second color until the second color portion measures 14".  In the last yarn over using this color, change to your third color.

Repeat row 2 with your third color until the second color portion measures 14".  Leave a long tail (about 12") to attach the pom-pom.

Make 2 pom-poms- one with the first color you used and one with the third color you used.  Then attach the pom-poms to the scarf as described in the above photos.  Weave in the ends.

NOTE: You can make the scarf narrower or wider if you desire- for your beginning chain use multiple of 2 + 1 to get your desired width.
