New Name, New Blog

Hi, Everyone!  I have decided to undergo a name change.  For years I have been known as Skein and Hook.  When I first started crafting, I fell head over heels in love with crocheting.  I crocheted everyday, as much as I could for years. Over time, I also began to experiment with new crafts and my horizons began to expand.  I truly enjoy all crafts...it is the basic element of creation that I am enamored with.  Today, my current favorites are embroidery, cross stitch, crochet, and my newest passion, quilting.  Since, I don't want the name- Skein and Hook- to limit me, I decided to make a change.  I will continue sharing all of my crafty journey under this new name. My old blog and existing free patterns will still be available here.  But as I come to update them and publish new ones, I'll be sharing at my new blog instead- jessicadayon.blogspot.com . You can follow me on Instagram-  @jessicadayon - where I share everything that I'm ...

New Quilt Pattern: Fanlight Quilt

I'm so excited to share a new quilt pattern with you today!  I designed a new quilt pattern especially to showcase the line Feed Sacks: True Blue by Linzee Kull McCray for Moda Fabrics.  I loved this line so much and I really wanted to showcase the beautiful fabrics with larger squares so they really shined.   What first drew me to this line is the tag line for it.  It reads, " Imagine growing your own vegetables and canning them, cleaning and cooking without modern appliances, and sewing clothes for your seven children. Feed Sacks: True Blue pays homage to the women who did all that and still took the time to stitch rickrack on a dishtowel, embroider a sweet bunny on the bodice of a baby’s romper, and use up every last scrap to create a quilt of warmth and beauty."  It really inspires me 💙💙💙 I do think this pattern would look beautiful with any fabric!  I want to make a few more in different lines.  It is especially great to showcase ...

Fat Quarter Shop Quilt Along: Snowballs Quilt

I had the pleasure of quilting along Fat Quarter Shop in their Snowballs Quilt Along.  The quilt pattern is called  Snowballs Quilt . For my fabric in this quilt, I chose Chicken Scratch by Kaye England .  This fabric is so beautiful and I am so happy I chose it!  I almost always choose white or off-white for my quilt backgrounds but this time I decided to use Mustard (Bella Solids 9900 213 to be exact).  This mustard is just perfect and I so love the way it looks as the background in this quilt! I had a lot of fun making this quilt!  And, I am beyond thrilled with how it turned out. To see other versions of this quilt, browse the hashtag on Instagram: #fatquartersnowballsquilt

I so proud to share it with you!  You can buy this pattern here . I worked hard to make this pattern easy to follow.  I walk you through block construction with step-by-step photos.  It works up quickly because it is composed of 16 large blocks.  I really think you'll enjoy making it! Moda Bake Shop Free Tutorial: Twinkle Pillows

Today I shared a free tutorial on the Moda Bake Shop for my Twinkle Pillow!  Pillows are a quick, easy project that make a big impact in a room.  In this tutorial, I use Ella & Ollie by Joanna Figueroa of Fig Tree Quilts.  This fabric is so, so beautiful! I love the beautiful spring look of it and I thought it would make great spring pillows.  Here I am using one charm pack and some yardage to make two 16". Stars are one of my favorite quilt blocks and here I really wanted to highlight the star.  In this free tutorial, I show the details of how I quilted the pillows to really highlight the star design. Head on over to Moda Bake Shop to get the free tutorial!  Remember, I'd love to see your Twinkle Pillows if you make them!  Tag me on Instagram  @skeinandhook or send me an email!  I hope you enjoy the pattern!

Fat Quarter Shop Quilt Along: Jelly Roll Ripples Quilt

I recently joined Fat Quarter Shop in one of their Quilt Alongs.  The quilt pattern is called Jelly Roll Ripples .  I chose to use Bunnies and Blossoms by Lauren Nash for Penny Rose Fabrics . The quilt pattern was great!  It was super fast and well-thoughtout.  I really enjoyed making it.  I'm glad that I have this jelly roll pattern in my arsenal because I have lots of jelly rolls that I'd like to use  ðŸ˜‰ and I'd definitely make this pattern again! Valentine's Quilt 2018

One of the quilt goals I have this year is to make a bunch of seasonal quilts.  I started quilting in earnest in July 2017 so I haven't been at this too long.  This year I wanted to start building my stash of seasonal quilts so that I have quilts to display around my house at all points of the year.  It's going to take a couple of years to really get a good bunch of these but you have to start somewhere ;)   When January rolled around, I immediately thought it was time to start a Valentine's quilt.  I searched all over for ideas.  After much deliberation, I decided on  Hearts Afloat by Bev Getschel .  I was stunned by how beautiful the heart border was.  And though I had never made a mitered corner or done a quilt with scallops, I was not  deterred.   For my fabric, I chose to use Bonnie and Camille pinks and reds (from assorted collections) and Moda Bella Solids White Bleached (9900 98) instead of the blue shown in the quil...

Free Quilt Pattern: All Squares Quilt

I've recently become a Chef at Moda Bake Shop and I'm having so much fun!  My first design was this block in their Countdown to Christmas.  My next design, that was shared on their blog last week, is my All Squares Quilt . I absolutely adore this quilt and the potential for versatility.  I used Farmhouse Reds by Minnick & Simpson.  I love this collection...the reds and whites are amazing.  But here are so many possibilities for this quilt...since the larger squares are 8", you can really show off large fabric designs if you'd like and do low volumes for the smaller squares. Here are some more pictures... Head over to Moda Bake Shop for the tutorial .  Enjoy!
