Free Crochet Pattern: Greene Pom Pom Hat

This is the hat that matches the Green Pom Pom Scarf that I published earlier this year.  I LOVE the texture of this hat.  Before you attach the pom pom, you can choose which side of the hat you want to use (it is completely reversible at this stage).

Here I'm using three colors to achieve a color block look but this hat would be really beautiful in a solid color as well.

Materials needed:

• U.S. I/9- 5.5 MM crochet hook

• Cascade Yarns Pacific in 3 colors- used here: 37 Clover, 52 Geranium, 01 Cream (you can easily substitute any other yarn, your  finished size may change though)

• Tapestry needle for sewing in the ends 
• Clover pom-pom maker- I used the 3 3/8" one

Gauge:

•I think that the best way to do the gauge for this is to make the hat up to the end of the increases.  In each size, I specify the size that your flat circle should be.  If your flat circle does not match my measurement, go up or down a hook until it does match and then continue on with the pattern.

Abbreviations:

• ch= chain

• sc= single crochet
• sc2tog= single crochet 2 together

• dc= double crochet

• sl st= slip stitch
• MR= magic ring
• BLO= back loop only

Finished size:

• Toddler/Preschooler= 17-19" head circumference
• Child= 20-21" head circumference

Important Notes:

• Please note when you are working this hat, sometimes you are making two stitches into the stitch from the previous round and sometimes you are making one stitch into the stitch from the previous round.  When you are making two stitches into the same stitch, I use ( ) to show that everything in ( ) goes into one stitch.  When you are working one stitch into one stitch, I do not use ( ).  I separate what goes into each stitch from the previous round by using a comma.  Example: If I say- (sc, dc), sc, dc, sc.  Then it means you (sc, dc) in the first stitch, sc in the 2nd stitch, dc in the 3rd stitch, sc in the 4th stitch.

Toddler:

1: MR, ch 2, 10 dc in the ring, pull the ring tight to close and join with sl st to 1st dc--- stitch count= 10.
2: Ch 1, (sc, dc) in each stitch around--- stitch count= 20.
3: Ch 1, (sc, dc), sc, (dc, sc), dc, (sc, dc), sc, (dc, sc), dc, (sc, dc), sc, (dc, sc), dc, (sc, dc), sc, (dc, sc), dc, (sc, dc), sc, (dc, sc), dc, join to the 1st sc with a sl st--- stitch count= 30.
4: Ch 1, *(sc, dc), sc, dc*, repeat from * to * around, join to the 1st sc with a sl st--- stitch count= 40.
5: Ch 1, *(sc, dc), sc, dc, sc, (dc, sc) dc, sc, dc*, repeat from * to * around, join to the 1st sc with a sl st--- stitch count= 50.
6: Ch 1, *(sc, dc), sc, dc, sc, dc*, repeat from * to * around, join to the 1st sc with a sl st--- stitch count= 60.
At this point, your flat circle should measure 5".  If it does not, go up or down a hook size until you meet this gauge.

7: Change 2nd color, ch 2, *dc, sc*, repeat from * to * around, join to the 1st dc with a sl st--- stitch count= 60.
8: Ch 1, *sc, dc*, repeat from * to * around, join to the 1st sc with a sl st.
9: Repeat round 7
10: Repeat round 8
11: Repeat round 7
12: Repeat round 8
13: Repeat round 7
14: Repeat round 8
15: Change to 3rd color, repeat round 7
16: Repeat round 8
17: Ch 7, turn and working back toward hat, skip the first ch, then sc in BLO 6 times, then sc2tog in the next stitch (this means the next stitch that was not worked in yet) and in the following stitch, turn and then working back up your ch, sc BLO 6 times, ch 1, turn working back down your chain, sc BLO 6 times, sc2tog in the next stitch and the following stitch, continue in this fashion all the way around the bottom of the hat until you get back to the beginning, I end working up the ch, working away from the actual hat, after the ch 1, I finish off then use a tapestry needle to  weave the brim closed, working the in the BLO to keep the ribbed look going and then weave in my ends completely.

The final length from crown to edge of brim should be 6.5".

Then, working back toward the hat, you skip the ch and sc in the BLO of each of the 6 sc from previous row.

Then you will sc2tog in the next stitch (this means the next stitch that was not worked in yet) and in the following stitch-

At this point, I turn the hat inside out, I like the way the inside looks.  It kind of spirals around.  But, you can decide which side you would like to use.

Then make a pom pom in the first color that you used (the same color that you used for rounds 1-6).  I used a 3 3/8" Clover pom-pom maker.  Attach the pom pom to the top of the hat and weave in the ends.

Child:

1: MR, ch 2, 10 dc in the ring, pull the ring tight to close and join with sl st to 1st dc.
2: Ch 1, (sc, dc) in each stitch around.
3: Ch 1, (sc, dc), sc, (dc, sc), dc, (sc, dc), sc, (dc, sc), dc, (sc, dc), sc, (dc, sc), dc, (sc, dc), sc, (dc, sc), dc, (sc, dc), sc, (dc, sc), dc, join to the 1st sc with a sl st.
4: Ch 1, *(sc, dc), sc, dc*, repeat from * to * around, join to the 1st sc with a sl st.
5: Ch 1, *(sc, dc), sc, dc, sc, (dc, sc) dc, sc, dc*, repeat from * to * around, join to the 1st sc with a sl st.
6: Ch 1, *(sc, dc), sc, dc, sc, dc*, repeat from * to * around, join to the 1st sc with a sl st.
7: Ch 1, *(sc, dc), sc, dc, sc, dc, sc, (dc, sc), dc, sc, dc, sc, dc*, repeat from * to * around, join to the 1st sc with a sl st.
At this point, your flat circle should measure 6".  If it does not, go up or down a hook size until you meet this gauge.

8: Change 2nd color, ch 2, *dc, sc*, repeat from * to * around, join to the 1st dc with a sl st.
9: Ch 1, *sc, dc*, repeat from * to * around, join to the 1st sc with a sl st.

16: Change to 3rd color, repeat round 8
17: Repeat round 9
18: Repeat round 8

19: Repeat round 9
20: Ch 7, turn and working back toward hat, skip the first ch, then sc in BLO 6 times, then sc2tog in the same stitch that you started your ch and in the next, turn and then working back up your ch, sc BLO 6 times, ch 1, turn working back down your chain, sc BLO 6 times, sc2tog in same as previous sc2tog and in next, continue in this fashion all the way around the bottom of the hat until you get back to the beginning, I end working up the ch, working away from the actual hat, after the ch 1, I finish off then use a tapestry needle to  weave the brim closed, working the in the BLO to keep the ribbed look going and then weave in my ends completely.  (See pictures above in toddler/preschooler size for help with the ribbed brim.)

The final length from crown to edge of brim should be 7.5".
